More fall migrants
by Curtis Smalling

Latest Update: September 1, 2010

Osprey are showing up in good numbers right now. Photo by Steven Bullock
Fall migration is in full swing now with some nice birds coming through. The highlight regionally this week was another shorebird, a Long-billed Curlew that is being seen at Hooper Lane down near Hendersonville. This is a first record away from the coast and follows the sighting of a Baird's Sandpiper on Big Yellow Mountain in Avery County last week. So keep an eye out for those shorebirds!

Warbler variety is picking up as well with Pine, Hooded, Black-throated Blue and Black-throated Green, Black and White, and many others moving through. A nice Mourning Warbler was photographed in Hendersonville by Tim Williams. See the photos of the Mourning and the Long-billed Curlew at the www.carolinabirdclub.org website.

Flycatchers this week include Yellow-bellied banded at Meat Camp, Eastern Wood-Pewees still around and a couple of Eastern Kingbirds moving through at my house this week.

Hawk migration will pick up as we move through September with Broad-winged Hawk migration peaking in late September. Hawk monitoring stations have started up at Parkway Bank in Lenoir, Mahogany Rock in Alleghany and at Big Bald. All of these efforts need volunteers and if you are interested in helping out, let me know and I can forward info to you on getting started.

We will have our regular Wednesday walk at Valle Crucis this week (Sept 1st)then a two week break. The walk starts at 8:30. Bring binos and a field guide if you have them.

For more information on birds in the High Country call the Watauga Birding Hotline at 828-265-0198. Also visit www.ncaudubon.org, www.carolinabirdclub.org, and the new High Country Chapter website at http://www.highcountryaudubon.org/.
