HIDEThe summer computer seminar series facilitated by Boone-based CyberDiamond, LLC. Begins July 13 for five consecutive weeks, are part of a fundaising effort to sustain the Center during limited operations until its grand reopening.
The series, titled Computer Security & Maintenance (CSM), is geared towards small businesses (fewer than 100 employees) and the average home computer user. A different focus, or topic, will be offered weekly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for five consecutive weeks from July 13 to August 11 at the Hayes Center in the Ebert Reception Hall on the second floor. The classes will be held on Tuesdays at 9AM and Wednesday's at 6:30pm each topic runs between 1 hr and 40 mins to 2 hr 30 mins with flexbible time for Q&Aâs at the end of each session. Each session can be purchased individually or get the 5th class FREE if you purchase the entire 5-course seminar by July 14.
âThe topics in this computer seminar series are extremely important to businesses who are committed to protecting the personal information of their customers,â says Jack Galvan, owner of CyberDiamond. âEvery computer that is connected to the Internet is vulnerable of data theft. There are things happening (and running) behind the scenes of your computers that you may not be aware of. Iâm going to try to help you understand and control these things in a way that even the casual computer user can identify. These sessions are geared to be fun. I guarantee you will not be bored.
âPlus, with the amount of technology kids are exposed to today, I can help make your home computer and their lives safer just by giving you some tips on safeguarding your computer and their interaction with social media sites.â
The idea behind CyberDiamondâs lecturing style is to make learning about computer safety and maintenance fun and interesting without getting all technical and, frankly, boring. Virtual safety and Internet security. Friendships have been built by volunteering time to building a trail that will last a lifetime. Please help us to make this trail something you can be proud of by volunteering your time and labor to build our last half mile of trail. Itâs a very rewarding experience and something you will certainly feel good about later when you look back and see how you gave back to your community.
Trail workdays are held every Saturday, weather permitting from
9am-3pm. You are free to work just part of the time if 9-3 is to long or if you cannot make it as early as 9. What we ask is if you come to work please wear cover toed shoes (no sandals or flip-flops of any kind are allowed to be worn when working on
the trail), please bring work gloves (leather preferred), and any water or snacks
you feel you will need while working.

HIDE FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS FOR OLDER ADULTS IN WATAUGA COUNTY
The Watauga County Project on Aging and Watauga Medical Center will be offering free health screening clinics to residents of Watauga County aged sixty and older. The clinics will be held at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center in Boone on Thursday, July 15 and Thursday, September 9. Screenings will also be held at the Western Watauga Community Center on Thursday, August 19 and Thursday, October 21. Persons aged 60-64 with no insurance are encouraged to participate in a screening and will be given priority if necessary.
HIDEThe screening will consist of a comprehensive metabolic panel, hemoglobin, hematocrit, lipid profile, urine analysis, medical history, teaching breast self-examinations and symptoms of prostate cancer, visual acuity, glaucoma, height, weight, blood pressure, and distribution of educational materials. Eligible persons may participate one time only in a 12-month period (July-June). Call 265-8090 to make an appointment or for further information. You must have an appointment for the clinic.

In partnership with the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center in Boone, AARP will offer the nationâs first and largest driver safety classroom refresher course geared especially to older adultsâ driver safety needs on Wednesday, August 18 from 8:30 am -1 pm. Classes will be held at the Watauga County Law Enforcement Center located at 184 Hodges Gap Rd., Boone, NC.

The cost of the program is $12 per person for AARP members ($14 for non-members) and will offer information on how to compensate for changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time; what to do if confronted by an aggressive driver; when to use a car phone; how medications may affect driving; and much more valuable information. Auto insurance discounts may be available for participation in this course (ask your auto insurance agent). Coffee, water, and a light snack will be provided. Call the Lois E. The Harrill Senior Center in Boone is once again offering a program developed specifically for people with arthritis.
HIDELow-impact, joint-safe exercises led by AF-certified instructors can be taken either sitting down or standing. This program has been proven in research studies to reduce arthritis pain and improve ability to do more daily activities. The program will be offered from 1:30-2:30pm each Monday and Wednesday (16 classes) beginning Monday, June 7. There is no charge to attend. HIDE WNC Lupus Support Group-LFA Peidmont Chapter
The Western North Carolina group has been formed for those living with lupus, as well as their family member and caregivers. It is estimated that in Haywood and surrounding counties there are more than 2,000 living with lupus. This group allows its members an opportunity for a healthy exchange of feelings, opinions and thoughts while coping with this very complicated illness. Meeting programs vary from guest speakers to DVD presentations and open group discussion.
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease which can be destructive to any major organ or tissue in the body. The disease can be very unpredictable and is potentially fatal, yet no satisfactory treatment or a cure exists. Approximately 1.5 million Americans and at least five million people worldwide have a form of lupus. Lupus strikes mostly females ages 15-44, although females and males of all ages can develop lupus, and African American women are 2-3 times more likely to develop lupus.

Do you know someone who is on Medicare and needs assistance in paying for their prescription drugs? Medicare beneficiaries may be eligible for the federal Extra Help low income subsidy (LIS) program if he/she has limited income and resources.
HIDEThe Extra Help program can increase cost savings by paying for all or part of the month premiums, annual deductibles, and provide lower prescription co-payments under a Medicare prescription drug plan. To qualify for Extra Help, the annual income must be limited to $1,353.75/month for an individual ($1,821.25/month for a married couple living together). Additionally, the total resources must be limited to $12,510 for an individual ($25,010 for a married couple living together). The resources do not include a primary residence or a vehicle. If you believe someone you know may qualify for the Extra Help program, please encourage them to apply on-line at www.socialsecurity.gov, or contact Social Security toll free at 800-443-9354. They may also contact the Watauga County Project on Aging at 265-8090 for assistance in completing an application.
